Emotional numbing

Feeling empty or numb can happen during or after trauma.

You don't have to feel a certain way for what happened to matter.

What is it?

Instead of fear, anger, or sadness, you may feel empty or find your feelings hard to reach. This can happen during trauma or afterward.

How can it happen?

Under extreme stress, feelings can become muted. This may be one of the body's automatic ways of getting through something overwhelming.

Supportive words

Not feeling everything right away doesn't mean it didn't matter.

Even if I can't feel or name what I went through right now, it still matters.

What it does not mean

Feeling numb does not mean what happened was minor. Emotions do not have to appear in a certain way or by a certain time.

What it might feel like

“I felt nothing.” “I was functioning like a robot.”
