Making sense of what happened and living with it (integration)

What happened can be part of your story without defining who you are.

You don't have to forget, forgive, or find meaning in the abuse to move forward at your own pace.

What is it?

Making sense of the past can change how you see yourself and what happened. Abuse doesn't have to stay the only way you understand who you are.

How can it happen?

Over time, it may help to reconsider who was responsible, what choices you really had, and which boundaries matter to you now. There is no required order or final outcome.

Supportive words

Making sense of what happened doesn't mean I have to forget it.

What happened can be part of my story without defining who I am.

What it does not mean

You don't have to forgive, forget, or prove you're over it. There's no required way or deadline to make sense of what happened.

What it might feel like

“This happened to me, but it is not all that I am.”
