My trust in the world may be shaken

After trauma, you may feel differently about who you can trust and how safe the world seems.

It makes sense if trusting what once felt safe is harder now. You don't need to rush yourself.

What is it?

You may question things you used to believe about who you can trust, how predictable life is, or how much say you have over what happens to you.

How can it happen?

Being hurt by someone you trusted, or in a place you thought was safe, can shake old assumptions. That may also affect later relationships.

Supportive words

It makes sense if trauma changed what I once believed was safe.

I don't owe anyone my trust, and I don't have to rebuild it quickly.

What it does not mean

You don't have to pretend the world feels as safe as it once did. You don't have to hurry to trust people again.

What it might feel like

“If this could happen, what can I trust?”

Background and sources

Shattered assumptions is a classic trauma theory that offers a way of understanding experiences, not a diagnosis.

These sources relate to the topic. The explanation is independently edited educational content, not a clinically tested intervention.
